The Pitfalls of Default Inter-Region Routing
Standard public internet transit between cloud regions introduces routing instability during oceanic cable maintenance events. By default, standard egress traverses varying autonomous systems (ASNs) with unpredictable packet loss. Establishing dedicated Cloud Interconnects or private VPC Peering tunnels guarantees packet traversal along provider backbones, reducing hop variance from 14 hops down to 3 internal virtual hops.
Optimizing Path MTU Discovery and Jumbo Frames
A frequent root cause of throughput degradation across inter-region tunnels is fragmentation. While standard Ethernet frames use a 1500-byte MTU, cross-region encapsulation headers (such as Geneve or VXLAN) consume 50–60 bytes. Configuring explicit TCP Maximum Segment Size (MSS) clamping at 1440 bytes prevents hidden packet retransmissions without relying entirely on Path MTU Discovery (PMTUD), which is frequently blocked by intermediate firewalls.

Dynamic BGP Route Filtering & BFD Fast-Failover
In multi-cloud or hybrid environments connecting local Taipei colocation facilities to public clouds, standard BGP keepalive intervals (30 to 60 seconds) are insufficient for low-latency financial or gaming backends. We advise configuring Bidirectional Forwarding Detection (BFD) with 300ms transmit/receive intervals and a multiplier of 3. This enables dead-path detection within 900ms, triggering automated route convergence before end-user timeouts occur.
